PCI Graphics Card to Amp Up a Legacy Computer's Graphics

A graphics card is an essential piece of computer hardware if one wants smooth and buttery graphics on screen, especially when playing games. While PCI graphics cards have been superseded by PCI Express video cards, users can still install them in older computers to improve graphics performance. ATI (now a part of AMD) marketed its PCI cards under the Rage and Radeon names.

What Are the Different Types of ATI PCI Graphics Cards?

While they may look very similar, graphics cards have different capabilities and may be designed for different tasks. An understanding of these factors can ensure users opt for the correct card for their needs.

  • Interface: Graphics cards connect to a motherboard via a slot. The three types of graphics cards interfaces are AGP, PCI, and PCI Express. Cards of one type are not compatible with other slots. The output interfaces on a card connect to monitors and displays. There are usually two output ports, one VGA and one DVI, on older PCI cards. In addition, some cards may feature TV-out or S-video ports to connect to legacy televisions.
  • Capabilities: Most popular graphics cards are designed to improve gaming performance. However, there are also workstation cards designed for professional use that are optimized differently. While the memory (VRAM) available in video cards is an important factor, the type of memory is more important than the amount. Users should opt for the faster type. In general, higher numbers are faster. For example, GDDR4 is faster than GDDR3.
  • Form Factors: Graphics cards come in different sizes. Low profile PCI cards are smaller in height as compared to standard video cards, and may be the only type that fit in some small desktop cases. In addition, some cards feature built-in fans as part of their cooling system. These can take up the space of an adjacent slot, and again, may not fit in all cases.

How Can Users Install Graphics Cards?

Installing a PCI video card is a similar process to installing other expansion cards. Users should ensure compatibility before installation and install the proper drivers for the cards to function.

  • Compatibility: As long as the computer's motherboard accepts PCI video cards, users should be able to install one with no physical obstacles. If the video card requires power, the computer's power supply should have an extra cable and also be able to provide the necessary power to the card.
  • Drivers: Without the correct drivers, users will not enjoy the full benefits of their PCI video card. Drivers are usually available directly from the manufacturer's website.
  • Installation: Users should turn off the computer and disconnect all cables before opening the case to access the motherboard. To install the video card, users should press it into the correct PCI slot.
