How to Maintain Your CTS

Every car relies as much on electricity as it does on gasoline. The engine requires it to start, and to keep running, while all the accessories use it for power. Without an alternator, your vehicle will only last as long as the battery.

What About Maintenance?

Every car requires maintenance in order to run properly, from a Cadillac CTS on a daily commute to a hearse that might get on the road once or twice a month. Its the nature of mechanical components; moving parts always wear out eventually no matter what the model, and the earlier the year the closer you are to needing new parts. Every time you do auto maintenance you should at least check the following areas:

  • Wheels: Check your wheels and tires for both inflation and damage regularly. A good set of all-weather tires can last for years.
  • Brakes: Also be sure to check your brakes before every inspection; this includes both the brake pads and the calipers. A few parts are well worth the peace of mind.
  • Fluids: Check the oil regularly and replace your oil filter with every change of season. Also check the radiator, the brake fluid, and your automatic transmission fluid.
  • Ignition and Electrical: Check the spark plugs and leads, and also the alternator. If it isnt charging the battery you wont get good spark; also a bad alternator can actually damage your battery.

How Does the CTS Compare to the STS?

Both the CTS and the Cadillac STS are similar sport sedans for the luxury market. Both feature similar stylings with vertical headlamps and follow the corporate line in design. The STS normally features a more aggressive styling, but the actual performance depends on the options and trim lines chosen:

  • Engines: The available engines range from as small as a 2.0 liter turbocharged four on the CTS, to a 3.6 liter V6 on the STS providing over 300 horsepower.
  • Drivetrain: As befits a luxury marque, these vehicles feature automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive, a change from the companys RWD history.
  • Suspension: Both vehicle models feature sport suspensions that seek to balance performance with comfort from the strut assembly to the shock absorbers.

Finding the Right Parts

The key to finding the right car parts for your vehicle starts with knowing the exact model and year of the car. Some companies have been known to change parts like the alternator from one year to the next without any visible changes to the exterior design. Use the VIN number to search for parts. OEM, or stock, parts are those from the manufacturer for that specific automobile. When possible, learn the stock number so you can more easily select the right alternator and generator parts with a minimum of difficulty.
