Maintaining a Cellphone Touchscreen

Touchscreens have become one of the most important interface devices of the 21st century. They control everything form cell phones to bank machines, and as long as you take care of it, the one on your iPhone 7 will continue to serve you well.

What Kind of Screen Does an iPhone 7 Have?

Like most smartphones, the Apple iPhone 7 has an LCD touchscreen as its primary interface. Not only does it provide you with information, but thanks to multi-touch controls it also lets you control your iPhone. The screen has the following characteristics:

  • Dimensions: The iPhone 7 has a 4.7-inch diagonal screen, while the iPhone 7 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen, both with a widescreen aspect ratio.
  • Resolution: The standard model offers a 1334 by 750-pixel LCD, while the larger iPhone 7 Plus has a full HD 1920 by 1080 pixel display.
  • Brightness and Color: The larger model iPhone offers a 1300:1 to contrast ratio, while the base model offers 1400:1. Both support the P3 color gamut and a maximum brightness of 625 cd/m2 from the LED-backlit screen.
  • Flash: Retina Flash uses the front screen as a flash for the front-facing camera, giving you another option for illuminated photography as well as the quad-LED flash that serves the rear camera.

How Do You Replace the Screen?

Sometimes when your iPhone 7 screen stops working the only way to deal with it is to get a new display assembly and do a screen replacement. It isn't difficult, but you do need to have a set of instructions open before you and take your time. Work one step at a time and don't try to force anything:

  • Tools: You need a spudger, screen opening picks, a series of small screwdrivers, and tweezers. The screwdrivers have to include at least one pentalobe, one Y000, and one #000 cross-head screwdriver. You also want a suction cup.
  • Tips: Discharge the battery to no more than 25 percent before beginning work. Use clear packing tape to hold a damaged screen together so that glass shards don't get everywhere. Always transfer the home button on your device from the original display to the new one, or your fingerprint sensor will stop responding.

How to Care for the Screen

One way to reduce the need to replace the screen is to take care of the existing LCD on your iPhone 7. Even though Apple included an oleophobic coating on the screen and the whole iPhone is water resistant to the IP67 standard it doesn't make it indestructible. You should consider a case and also a screen protector to protect the iPhone 7 from incidental damage and reduce the likelihood of screen damage.
