Bare Escentuals specializes in mineral-based makeup under the brand name bareMinerals. Bare Escentuals offers complete face coverage and beauty products using ingredients manufactured and refined from natural compounds.

The exact ingredient formula varies based on product and color. For example, the tinted hydrating gel cream is made with different ingredients than mineral powder foundation. Regardless, there are several main ingredients used throughout the bareMinerals product line, which include:

• Mica: This mineral is responsible for providing your face with a shimmering effect due to its natural reflective properties.
• Iron Oxide: Responsible for the wide array of color options or pigments in products such as foundation, eyeshadow and blush products.
• Bismuth Oxychloride: Derived from the bismoclite mineral, this ingredient is an inorganic compound used to enhance the reflective or shimmer, in the original foundation. This ingredient is not found in the bareMinerals Matte product.
• Titanium Dioxide: Found in the foundation and blush Bare Escentuals powders, this inorganic compound is purified from natural titanium to remove metal contamination, such as lead and mercury. It offers UV protection from direct sunlight.

Much like any other makeup, you need to understand your skin type before deciding which bareMinerals product is suitable for you.

• Skin type: This skin type is a major determining factor regarding the safety of makeup ingredients. Certain ingredients, such as bismuth oxychloride, have been reported as irritants for those with sensitivities. Always perform a patch test before applying any new makeup to your face. Apply a small amount and observe the area for signs of inflammation, itching or redness.
• Large pores: If you have large pores, powder can collect inside and amplify uneven face texture. Liquid-based mineral foundation is recommended instead of powder-based products.

bareMinerals offers six color categories. Each primary category features gradient variations ranging from lighter to darker. Matching your skin tone to product shade is a fairly uncomplicated process.

• Identify your undertone by holding a white sheet of fabric, or paper, up to your skin.
• Analyze your skin shade compared to the white paper or cloth.
• If your color appears pinkish or yellowish, then those are your undertones. If the tone is neither too pink or yellow, then you’re likely a neutral-based shade.
• Test shade compatibility by applying a small amount directly to your jawline. Do you notice an obvious shade difference? If not, then you’ve found your compatible shade. If so, adjust color tone based on this test.
