As a compact sports utility vehicle, your Ford Escape is designed to handle all types of conditions. However, for safety purposes, you want to know that when bringing your automobile to a stop, all components of the braking system are in good repair and will work properly.

While it is obvious that your pads should be changed when there is a noticeable change in your stopping capabilities, you do not want to wait until this point. Inspecting the system often will reveal a more accurate and safer way of knowing when these parts should be changed. These parts slowly wear away each time that you bring your automobile to a stop. Over time, this deterioration causes the brake pad to thin out. When the brake pad is just 1/8-inch to 3/16-inch thick, it is time to do a replacement.

The two common types of brake pads available for passenger vehicles are metallic and ceramic. Metallic pads have been around the longest and are made for all types of automobiles. Ceramic pads were created to prevent the dust that is common with metallic alternatives, which are in turn easier on the environment.

• Ceramic: These parts are made from ceramic materials much like pottery that has been fired and hardened in a kiln. Each ceramic pad is embedded with copper fibers to create a sturdy product.
• Metallic. These parts are made of metal shavings including brass, steel, and copper that are bonded together with resin materials.

The caliper is a component of your brake system that is responsible for squeezing the brake pad against the rotor to stop the automobile. If these parts are not working properly, this can cause your entire system to fail. Here are some symptoms that will help you diagnose a bad brake caliper.

• Fluid leaks: When your system is operating properly, you should not have to fill the fluid. However, when the caliper is worn, you may notice fluid around the inside of your tire.
• Abnormal sounds: When you hear an abnormal sound that is coming from the area around your wheel when bringing your automobile to a stop, you may want to inspect the calipers.
• Pulling: If there is pulling to one side of the automobile while stopping, this may mean that one side of your brakes are not engaging properly due to a faulty caliper.
