Suzuki Forenza Valve Covers

The engine is a crucial part of any vehicle, including the Suzuki Forenza. Knowing how the parts under the hood of your Forenza come together and work to make it run is important to properly maintain your car. The valve cover is just one of those parts that need to be monitored and addressed when necessary.

What are the valve cover and gasket?

The valve cover is a removable cover made of metal (usually aluminum) or plastic that is placed on top of the motor to provide protection. It is attached by a rubber, plastic, or cork gasket that lines the base of the cover. Together, they seal the top of the engine to prevent debris from entering the valves and oil leaks from happening. These parts are removable to allow access to the motors valves for maintenance.

What are signs of a damaged valve cover or gasket?

Over time, the valve cover gasket can become worn, dry, cracked, and damaged. While less common, the cover can also crack. In these events, an oil leak in and around the engine is possible. If you notice any of the following signs coming from your Suzuki Forenza sedan or wagon, one or both might be damaged.

  • The presence of oil on or around the cover
  • The smell of burning oil
  • Rough motor performance
  • Low oil level
How do you change the valve cover and gasket?

In the event that the cover or gasket is damaged on your Suzuki model, it is important to change it immediately to stop the oil leak. If left without repair, the oil can leak further into the motor or onto surrounding parts under the hood. This can cause severe engine damage, including failure, and cost you additional time spent on repairs. Be sure to allow the car to cool down before attempting any work on it. Refer to your owners manual for the proper removal of parts.

  • Remove the intake, solenoid, and spark plug wires from your vehicle.
  • Remove the valve cover bolts and the cover itself. If you are changing the cover, replace it with the new one. Bolt it back down and replace the previously removed parts.
  • If you are replacing the gasket, remove the old one. Scrape off any extra oil or pre-existing sealer, and ensure that the area is clean. Clean out any parts that oil may have leaked into.
  • Apply the designed sealer where instructed, and place the new gasket down.
  • Put the cover back in place, bolt it back down, and replace the parts that were removed from the car in the first step.
