The founders of the GAP took the store's name from the common phrase "the generation gap." This saying was increasing in use in the late 1960s in reference to the widening gulf between teens and young adults and their parents. As a personal shopper, Donald Fisher found it especially hard to find jeans in other apparel stores of the era, which is why the GAP began as a jeans-only retailer that also sold records. The original Fisher family still owns much of the company's stock. Donald Fisher was on the board of directors until his death in 2009. Doris Fisher remains on the board, along with their son, Robert J. Fisher, who acts as the company's chair.
