Chevrolet Colorado Headlights

Headlights are important to both the function and safety of your Chevrolet Colorado truck. If one or both of your headlights are damaged, burned out, or otherwise incapacitated, you should replace them immediately, for your safety as well as the safety of other drivers on the road. Learning more about the options available will help you make the best decision when it comes to buying replacement headlights for your Colorado.

What are the headlight bulb types?

There are three types of bulbs to choose from when it comes to replacing your Chevrolets headlights:

  • Halogen: Halogen lights are found in most of the cars on the road. Similar to the incandescent bulbs you likely use in your house, these use heated tungsten filaments to produce light, which generates a significant amount of heat.
  • Xenon: These are also known as High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lights. Xenon bulbs produce a bright, blue-white illumination and only a small amount of heat. They require a lot of power at first to produce their first burst of light, but then require less energy to produce a constant brightness.
  • LED: LED stands for Light-Emitting Diode. Instead of relying on gas or filaments, LEDs use small diodes to produce light via electric current. LEDs require little power to illuminate and generally produce a low amount of heat. The light they produce is naturally directional, which means they make a natural choice for headlights.
What are OEM Chevrolet Colorado headlights?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. When headlights carry this designation, it means they were made by the brand that originally manufactured headlights for Chevrolet Colorado vehicles in the factory. Therefore, OEM headlights are sure to be compatible with your vehicle.

All other brands that make headlights for the Colorado truck are referred to as aftermarket. Aftermarket brands may offer different styles of headlight assemblies for your Chevy truck. If you plan to buy these aftermarket products, make sure they are listed as compatible with the make and model year of your Colorado.

How do you change a headlight bulb?

Keep in mind that the process may vary slightly depending on the model year of your vehicle. However, here are some basic guidelines to follow:

  • First, make sure your vehicle is parked with the ignition off. Then, open the hood.
  • Locate the assembly of the headlight you need to replace. Twist the existing bulb socket counterclockwise to loosen it, and then remove it from the housing. Keep in mind that there are two bulb sockets: one for the high beam and another for the low beam.
  • Detach the connector from the back of the existing bulb and set it aside.
  • Attached the connector to the replacement bulb and insert that bulb into the headlight housing, twisting it clockwise to lock it into place.
  • Close the hood and then start the ignition so you can test that the new bulb is working properly.
