Keep Your Pride: Buy a Complete Harley-Davidson Engine

When riding a Harley, you don't want your bike to break in the middle of the busy road because it's against the cool looks associated with these stylish machines. Perhaps, it's time to buy complete Harley-Davidson engines for sale on eBay.

Types of Harley engines for sale

Since 1903, Harley-Davidson produced mainly four types of affordable Harley engines. These complete Harley-Davidson engines can be divided into four categories: one-cylinder engine, big twin engines, sports engine, and water-cooled engines.

  • One-Cylinder Engines: These used Harley engines were mainly manufactured for single-cylinder motorcycles. They were produced regularly until 1934 before big twin engines took over. If you have a vintage Harley-Davidson before World War II, it may be using F-Head and Flathead engine models.
  • Twin-Engine: The earlier twin-engines were called V-Twins, which were mainly produced for models prior to 1984. These engines are distinguished by their unique names such as “Knucklehead,” “Panhead,” and “Shovelhead.” Things changed with the introduction of Evolution in 1984, which was a solid 1,340cc engine. Subsequent upgrades were made by introducing Twin-Cam and Milwaukee-Eight. In fact, Milwaukee-Eight has three to four valves per cylinder.
  • Sports Engines: Before 1970, sports engines in Harley motors are easily recognizable by one or two alphabet series such as XA, G, and G(W-Engine). The company introduced Ironhead, a two-valve per cylinder engine, in 1957. Along with XR, it was the main engine for the Harley-Davidson sports bike version. These days, most sports bike versions use either Evolution or XR engines.
  • Air-Cooled Engines: Breaking the 115-year tradition of Harley-Davidson engines for sale, the company has recently introduced air-cooled engines in some of its models. These are used in limited models that include Electra Glide Ultra Classic Limited, Tri-Glide, and CVO Limited.

Exchanging Harley's air-cooled engine with a liquid-cooled engine

Depending on the bike, you may replace used Harley engines and transmissions. Liquid-cooled engines are mostly used to reduce heat and improve performance. It's the number one reason you see these engines on sports bikes. On most cruisers like Harley, air-cooled engines are practical because these bikes run on less RPM, dissipating less heat. In fact, it's also easier to maintain an air-cooled engine. In contrast, if you live in a hot desert such as Arizona or Texas, switching to a liquid-cooled engine may not be a bad idea for used Harley engines. Each engine may have a slightly different procedure, so refer to the manufacturer's instructions.

Harley's custom vehicle operations feature

When buying powerful Harley engines, you may come across a variety of limited-edition customizations for models such as Ultra Classic Electra Glide, RoadKing, Dyna, Softail, and VRSC families. These customizations are carried out by the dedicated Harley-Davidson team that selects two to five base models every year and adds higher-displacement engines, performance upgrades, and styling additions.
