- Wheel: Tires for mountain bikes come in various sizes, which are most commonly 26, 27.5, and 29 inches. A large tire makes it easier to maintain a high speed and roll over obstacles, while a smaller tire allows for greater maneuverability and faster acceleration. Different frames are compatible with different wheel dimensions, so be sure to select a frame that works with the wheels that you wish to use.
- Frame: Bicycle frames oftentimes come in XS, S, M, L, and XL, and these models differ in many variables, including stand-over, top tube length, and seat tube length. Generally, height is a good indicator of the correct model, as extra-small frames are built for riders between 60 and 64 inches tall, small for 64 to 67 inches, medium for 67 to 70 inches, large for 70 to 73 inches, and extra large for riders over 73 inches tall. However, these guidelines can differ between frames, so be sure to look at all factors when determining the correct choice.
- Steel: Steel is known for being highly durable, and frames can be made out of either high-tensile or chrome molybdenum steel.
- Aluminum: Aluminum is an extremely lightweight and durable material, and it is commonly used on mountain bikes, as it provides an efficient ride while maintaining stability and stiffness.
- Titanium: Titanium frames are commonly used on high-end bicycles and are highly durable and strong. Titanium maintains its shape, but can also flex, so it is commonly used in mountain bike shock absorbers as well.
- Carbon fiber: Carbon fiber is tough, absorbs vibration, and is very lightweight, making it a great choice for bikes. Carbon fiber is also resistant to corrosion, so it is highly durable.
- Hardtail: These bikes do not have any suspension and consist of a completely rigid frame. Theses frames are commonly used on road bikes, they make the bicycle lighter, and they are ideal for flat or long-distance riding.
- Front suspension: Front suspension bikes incorporate a shock on the front fork of the bike, which helps to absorb impact from drops and bumps when riding.
- Full suspension: Full suspension mountain bikes maximize comfort, as these models utilize a suspension on both the front and rear of the bike. These bicycles are able to absorb all impact, providing a smoother ride and maximum efficiency when riding down trails, taking jumps, or dropping off obstacles.
