4 Things to Know About Power Acoustic 15 Car Subwoofers

Traveling becomes so much more interesting when you have the music on. You can boost the bass on your music with Power Acoustik 15-inch car subwoofer models.

What is the subwoofer function?

The subwoofer in your car is a loudspeaker that is specifically designed to reproduce low-pitch audio frequencies, also known as the bass. The frequencies in which the Power Acoustik device works are between 200 and 200 Hz. The woofer part of the loudspeaker's enclosure is 15 inches in diameter and has a cone shape. Subwoofers come in different sizes, measured by inches, and offer varying sound quality.

What are the different amplification types?

Subwoofers are divided into two types that are based on their amplification:

  • Active subwoofer: Has its own amplifier inside the device and equalization that can be adjusted by the user in order to increase or decrease frequency output.
  • Passive subwoofer: Has a subwoofer drive but no amplifier.
What is the ohm value of a subwoofer?

Ohm is the value derived from the resistance to the electrical current produced by a certain voltage. As the resistance increases, the current decreases. The larger current value also means more power. The higher the ohm, the lower current flow and watt value going through the Power Acoustik device. Examples are a 4-ohm subwoofer or a 2-ohm subwoofer. The sound amplifiers have a limit on the current they can withstand, and so a matching ohm value must be chosen.

What are different values of subwoofers?

Values that you need to pay attention to when purchasing a car-audio subwoofer are:

  • RMS: A higher RMS value is equal to more bass. RMS is the continuous power output. This value has to match the amp's power output.
  • SPL: Sound-pressure level. This is the sensitivity of the car subwoofer and how much power it will need to produce a desired sound volume. A higher sensitivity needs less power to produce the same sound as a higher power run through a low-sensitivity device.
  • Frequency range: Range of audio that the car subwoofer can produce. A lower values mean a deeper sound and stronger bass.
  • Impedance: The impedance measured in ohms can be 2, 4, or 8 ohms. The most important part of choosing the impedance is having a value that matches your amplifier's.
  • Voice coils: The number of voice coils can be single or dual in a single subwoofer cone. For a dual voice coil, each voice coil has its own connection but is mounted on a single car subwoofer. The dual sub gives flexibility when choosing the number of coils used.
